Rotating Space (model 1) – the title alone alludes to the theme of space research that underpins this work. This piece is a commentary by Zybach on the concept behind one of the great utopias of space research: the quest to develop a space station which, by rotating about its own axis, would create gravitational conditions similar to those on Earth, making possible life as it exists on Earth. The idea has been around since the 1920s and continued to inspire the work of such rocket scientists and space travel experts as Wernher von Braun into the 1960s. Rotating Space (model 1) by Andreas Zybach (*1975 Olten, CH) belongs to a series which has its roots in a rotating, seed-laden model exhibited by the artist as part of an art project for Munich’s Alter Botanischer Garten. The work that belongs to the EPO collection is a static view of a project in which the meaning of controlled movement was fundamental.
