Gardar Eide Einarsson

Untitled, 2013
Acrylic paint, canvas
7 panels, each 80 x 80 x 2 cm

In his paintings, sculptures and installations, Gardar Eide Einarsson (*1976 Oslo, NO) recontextualizes and appropriates found images to reflect on how individuals deal with societal and governmental power structures. He captures the extremes of the zeitgeist by observing how the world is simultaneously shaped by a powerful few and countless people experiencing repression.

His large black and white, geometrical paintings might seem at first glance to echo the minimalistic visual language of many artists with a formal interest in shape and composition. Untitled consists of seven paintings, each consisting of two black triangles stretching inwards from either side of an otherwise white canvas.  Upon closer inspection, however, the viewer may detect random spills of black paint disrupting the otherwise carefully controlled geometry; drips that suggest the paintings may have been done in a hurry or anyway by a human being rather than a pre-programmed machine. Looking at these paintings, one may pause to think of the claim made by the philosopher Aristotle: that humans are the same by nature but different by accident.
