Jarosław Fliciński

Jarosław Fliciński (*1965 Gdansk, PL) engages with the dialogue between painting and architecture. Each of his murals, panel paintings or site-specific installations is specially created for a particular exhibition space. And so it goes for the EPO installation, which, thanks to its size and vertical stripes, has the effect of a curtain and impacts the perception of the space. The two works explore the limits of the colour spectrum and play with the depiction of cold and warm colours. Though both murals use similar colours, the effect produced is different because of how the colours are combined. Fliciński does not offer the viewer any guidance on how to interpret his work and thus leaves room for individual explanations. The witty titles he gives his pictures – "Are you going to master a snake?" and "Blessing Revolution" – reinforce connotations and motivate the viewer to search harder for a connection to the picture. But they can also leave the viewer feeling somewhat confused, because though the titles convey completely different meanings, the pictures clearly relate to each other on the basis of the colours used. It is exactly this divergence that invites the viewer to engage with the artist's work more deeply and for longer.
