The three lightboxes by Katrin Korfmann (*1971 Heidelberg, DE) depict images of people engaging in sport. Seen from a bird’s eye view, the individuals, shown playing ice hockey or football and bathing in a public swimming pool, look like miniatures. The monochrome colour fields of the lightboxes draw on the different backgrounds photographed – ice, grass and water. The lightboxes are composed of individual photographs or video stills taken from one minute of film. The serial arrangement of the scenes, which at times gives the impression of motion studies, creates ornamental structures. These have the appearance of a visual melody that follows its own rhythm and marries with the original photographic source material. The truncation of the countless distinct images and the incomplete reproduction of the sportsmen leave the viewer contemplating Korfmann’s three lightboxes with a sense of vagueness, condemning his or her gaze to a perpetual state of lookout.
