Stéphane Dafflon

AST 085, 2006
Acrylic on canvas
170 x 170 cm

The compositions for Stéphane Dafflon's meticulously executed and formally reduced abstract paintings begin at the computer screen, before being committed to canvas. Dafflon (*1972 Fribourg, CH) draws inspiration for his artistic expression from the universal language of abstraction, and is influenced in equal measure by minimal art, which stands for the use of geometric shapes, and concrete art, which seeks to neutralise metaphorical components. His creativity is also fed by contemporary trends such as industrial design and forms from pop culture. His titles, which are brutal in their simplicity - AST and a number - give the impression of a series of works, but actually do not indicate anything. Merely referring to the technique used (acrylique sur toile [acrylic on canvas]), they do not reference any contextual cohesion between the works.
