It is a global standard for patent information and statistics and is used for sophisticated analysis. This valuable information is sourced from the European Patent Office's databases and can be accessed either as bulk downloads or through online platforms. It is currently updated twice a year.

What data is in PATSTAT?

PATSTAT is a unique basis for conducting sophisticated analyses of bibliographic and legal event data. It has become a standard in the field of patent information and statistics. You can run queries in the databases, conduct statistical analyses, visualise the data and download it.

PATSTAT consists of two individual databases: PATSTAT Global and PATSTAT EP Register. PATSTAT can be accessed through TIP, PATSTAT Online and as a bulk data set. 

PATSTAT Global

PATSTAT Global contains bibliographical data relating to patent documents from patent offices from around the world. It also includes the legal event data from more than 40 patent authorities contained in the EPO’s worldwide legal event data (INPADOC).

PATSTAT EP Register

This database contains bibliographic, procedural and legal event data covering all European and PCT patent applications. Detailed information is available on opposition and appeal procedures, as well as on legal representation.
