Advanced examination topics in the chemical field
This workshop addresses topics relevant to the patentability of inventions in the chemical field at an advanced level. There will be three sessions covering the following topics:
- session 1: particularities of assessing novelty and inventive step in chemistry: polymorphs, isotopically modified compounds and antibodies; medical use claims, second medical use claims; guidelines and relevant Boards of Appeal decisions
- session 2: aspects of clarity and sufficiency of disclosure in chemistry
- session 3: patentability aspects of Markush formulae
The theoretical aspects will be supported by study cases.

Objectives
Expert workshops are a unique platform for experts from the national patent offices of member states to interact with their peers at the EPO. Participants discuss selected cases in a technical field and compare the practices at the different national patent offices and at the EPO. If applicable, the main decisions of the Boards of Appeal and the most relevant national case law are discussed from the point of view of patent examiners.
