12 minutes with EPO President António Campinos
European Patent Office (EPO) President António Campinos appeared on the Euronews programme “12 Minutes With” to discuss Europe’s competitiveness and innovation landscape. The interview was recorded shortly after the launch of the EPO Technology Dashboard 2025, which confirmed that demand for European patents has exceeded
200 000 in a single year for the first time.
Drawing on data from the Dashboard, President Campinos noted that Europe faces significant challenges in cloud computing and artificial intelligence, but stressed that the continent can still compete in quantum technology and other emerging fields if it acts decisively. He added that Europe performs strongly in fundamental research, but continues to face challenges in translating these advances into commercially viable products and services.
Fragmentation within the single market, including the coexistence of different national stock exchanges and complex regulatory differences, remains a critical obstacle to scaling innovative companies. He also welcomed the European Commission’s proposal to simplify company registration and harmonise rules across member states, describing it as an important step toward strengthening Europe’s overall competitiveness and creating a more cohesive single market.
