The Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) Global Summit on Technology, R&D and Intellectual Property 2025 concluded in New Delhi with a strong focus on research, deep technology and intellectual property as drivers of India’s growing technological independence. The Summit brought together leaders from industry, policy and research, reflecting the breadth of India’s innovation ecosystem, including representatives from Tata Steel, Tata Motors and Mahindra & Mahindra. Discussions highlighted the close alignment between India’s innovation goals and the European Patent Office’s mission to promote global intellectual property excellence, with shared priorities around effective IP strategies, deep technology development and stronger collaboration between Europe and India.

CSO Roberta Romano-Götsch delivered a keynote address highlighting patents as pivotal assets for achieving the UN Sustainable Development Goals, going beyond protection enabling sharing knowledge and accelerating innovation-led solutions to global challenges. By unlocking patent information and aligning innovation with the UN Sustainable Development Goals, we can enable greener technologies, resilient agriculture, and inclusive growth. When innovation is guided with purpose, it truly becomes a force for good, for society, for business, and for humanity. She also engaged in exchanges on the European patent system, including the EPO’s role as PCT International Search Authority and the relevance of the Unitary Patent, stressing the growing importance of global IP co-operation in accelerating innovation.

Innovation growth and international IP co-operation

India’s recent intellectual property performance formed a key backdrop to the discussions. The country recorded more than 100 000 patent applications in 2024, with over half filed domestically. In addition, speakers pointed to a 15.7% increase in global patent filings and a 149.4% rise in grants in 2023, alongside India’s climb from 48th to 39th place in the Global Innovation Index between 2020 and 2024. These trends underline India’s growing role as an innovation hub and its relevance as a partner for international co-operation.
