EPO launches modular European Patent Administration Certification (EPAC) to enhance professional development and patent learning
The European Patent Office (EPO) has introduced a progressive and modular structure for the EPAC, enhancing accessibility and flexibility for professionals looking to certify their patent administration expertise.
Offered since 2022 as the first pan-European certification designed for paralegals, patent administrators and formalities officers, the EPAC has rapidly grown, with more than 1 800 candidates from across the globe. It has attracted early-career professionals and a wider group of innovation and IP professionals worldwide, enabling hundreds of successful candidates to advance in their careers.
This uptake has paved the way for offering a more flexible certification pathway that has been adapted to the evolving needs of the wider innovation community, allowing for gradual progress and expertise recognition to support both established professionals and those entering the field. The EPAC is now structured around four modules, each with a particular focus. The new modules taken together substitute one single examination and serve the interests of patent administrators. Taken separately, the modules appeal to the interests of a broad range of audiences.
Earn EPAC certification one diploma at a time
The introduction of the flexible, modular EPAC structure enables candidates to pursue the qualification at their own pace in a targeted way that reflects their professional needs and aspirations. At the same time, it opens more doors for career development, mobility and entry into new roles across the innovation ecosystem.
The successful completion of each module earns the candidate an independent diploma, and once they have obtained all four diplomas, they are awarded the EPAC certification. Together, the modules cover all procedural aspects of the EPC, PCT and Paris Convention, as well as the Unitary Patent and relevant national laws and agreements.
Next steps
The new structure will be implemented from EPAC 2026 onwards, with enrolment opening in the second quarter of 2026 via the European Qualification and Certification Portal. Candidates preparing for the next EPAC cycle should monitor the EPAC page, where key dates for EPAC 2026 will be published in due course. The EPAC preparation course will open for registration in Q1 2026.
Supporting the next generation of patent professionals in Europe
From 2026 onwards, the Candidate Support Programme (CSP) will broaden its scope to include the EPAC. Each year, participating National Patent Offices will select one candidate to receive a comprehensive support package for preparing to EPAC. For more information about the programme and eligibility, please visit the CSP hub.
