EPO meets with Samsung SDI
On 3 July, the European Patent Office (EPO) held a hybrid meeting with Samsung SDI, a leading subsidiary of the South Korean Samsung Group specialising in batteries. The meeting was one of 50 planned this year under the Quality Action Plan initiative, "deepened dialogue with our users". Direct user engagement provides the EPO with valuable insights and helps to identify areas for improvement.
During the meeting, the Samsung SDI delegation expressed gratitude for the opportunity to strengthen the long-standing relationship with the EPO and discuss future plans. The company acknowledged the EPO’s most recent efforts in user engagement and commitment to achieving carbon neutrality by 2030. The meeting included an information session for EPO examiners on the latest battery technologies.
Dr Youngki Ha, Intellectual Property Group Vice President, participated in an interview, during which he underlined the company’s renewed interest in the European IP system, particularly with the recent implementation of the Unitary Patent and the Unified Patent Court. “For companies with significant production operations in Europe, like Samsung SDI, there is active consideration of adjustments to IP strategies." He also praised the EPO’s examiners for the quality of their work, describing it as “widely recognised as the best, which greatly assists applicants in securing robust patent rights that can withstand invalidation trials or infringement lawsuits."
This is the fourth interview in the series “The voice of our users”. In each episode, we invite users to share their views on the EPO and our practices.
