EPO President joins The Europe Conversation on Euronews
António Campinos, President of the European Patent Office (EPO), has spoken about the necessity of doing more to convert Europe’s wealth of knowledge into business success. As the first step towards commercialisation, he said, patents are key to enhancing European competitiveness. The interview was recorded in March shortly after the launch of the Patent Index 2024, which provides in-depth data on the latest global technology trends based on patent filings at the EPO.
The Patent Index 2024 has confirmed that demand for European patents remains high amid global uncertainties. What needs to happen now, said President Campinos in conversation with Euronews, is for Europe to foster an innovation-friendly environment that enables more startups to scale up and secure their future in an increasingly diverse European innovation landscape that is driven by worldclass scientific research. He concluded that in the global context, Europe remains an economic powerhouse with the potential to retain more of its own highly skilled talent, as well as further diversify its partnerships globally.
