Girls’ Day 2025

A memorable day for 200 girls and a potential first step towards a STEM career

On 3 and 10 April, in Munich and The Hague respectively, the EPO welcomed some 200 girls, from 28 nationalities, from 21 member states, Africa, America and Asia and 17 schools to its premises to celebrate Girls’ Day. The event was an opportunity to join forces with local partners and offer a unique, hands-on programme encouraging the participants to explore science, technology, invention and careers in STEM – so maybe one day they can become examiners or inventors themselves.

Steve Rowan, EPO Vice-President Patent Granting Process, opened this seventh edition of the Girls’ Day in The Hague with these inspiring words.

“You are all clearly passionate about making a difference in the world: tackling climate change or improving the health and well-being of everyone. The world needs this passion. Today you will see how science, technology, engineering, and maths are key to solving these challenges, and I hope we will inspire you to channel your energy into STEM as a potential future career.”

The programme combined technology and creativity through workshops and presentations, giving young learners aged 11 to 15 a chance to develop problem-solving skills, boost their confidence, ask questions and explore potential career paths. In Munich, participants met Rochelle Niemeijer, the 2024 Young Inventors Prize winner. In The Hague, Filipa de Sousa Rocha, a 2023 Young Inventors Prize finalist, spoke with the girls about her journey and what inspired her to become an inventor.

The mayor of Rijswijk also joined the event in The Hague, accompanied by Young Ambassadors from the children’s rights group, underlining the importance of inclusion and empowerment in STEM education.

Participants enjoyed presentations from the European Southern Observatory (ESO) in Munich and an inspiring session by the European Space Agency (ESA) in The Hague, adding a touch of inspiration from Europe’s leading scientific institutions.

Through these two events, the Office reaffirmed its commitment to inspiring the next generation of women examiners and STEM professionals, while also supporting diversity and contributing to the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (UN SDGs).

A heartfelt thank you to all dedicated volunteers who made this Girls’ Day an unforgettable experience!
