High-growth technology business forum: growth financing

On 28 October, the EPO's European Patent Academy together with the Licensing Executive Society International (LESI) held the third High-growth technology business forum, dedicated to the topic of growth financing. The event was designed especially for high-growth technology businesses and particularly SMEs, the major drivers of Europe's economic growth.

This is part the high-growth technology business initiative developed by the EPO and LESI to support technology start-ups and scale-ups that need venture capital to finance their high growth.

More than 400 people from 56 countries registered for the online event, including C-suite executives (CEOs, CTOs, founders), business decision-makers, IP professionals and other stakeholders.

Chaired by the venture capital advisor Willem Bulthuis, the event explored the live case study of Plasmapp, an innovative manufacturing company specialising in plasma technologies developed in partnership with the Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology (KAIST) that has devised a novel plasma steriliser STERLINK® for medical tools.

Mr SeungJin (Aiden) Han, CSO/CLO of Plasmapp, shared insights into the company's success and the role of a strong IPR portfolio in growing a medical device company and securing USD 50m in funding. A global expert panel took the audience on a journey into the inner workings of the success stories presented, including an in-depth look at the role of intellectual assets. The dynamic discussion amongst the panel experts was followed by a Q&A session with all participants. Dana Colarulli, the Executive Director of LESI, acted as host, guiding participants through the programme.

During the event, participants had a chance to deepen their understanding of the key role played by IP portfolios and strategy in attracting investments and increasing company value. The forum organisers have created a condensed list of take-away messages from the panel experts participating in the forum. It will be available soon.

The High-growth technology business forums is part of the EPO-LESI joint work plan to strengthen co-operation in innovation support.
