MyEPO services: launch of groundbreaking AI-powered legal search tool
After a successful pilot phase, the European Patent Office (EPO) is delighted to announce the launch of its Legal Interactive Platform (LIP), a legal search tool developed in line with our Strategic Plan 2028 (SP2028) and now available to all our users within the MyEPO services suite.
The LIP is the first generative AI-based tool to be added to our suite of online services. Queries can be formulated in a conversational manner, responses are swiftly generated and structured, with short summaries and direct links to the relevant legal documents. Pilot users, as well as EPO examiners who have been using the platform since last year, value the platform’s speed, clarity of responses and ease of use, including when it comes to refining searches. The LIP is a significant step forward in enhancing our portfolio of online services, with a focus on facilitating direct access to information and delivering efficient, simple and user-centric solutions that are powered by cutting-edge technologies.
Fast and focused answers to users’ queries
Accessible via the law scales icon in the top right-hand corner of MyEPO Portfolio, the LIP leverages the latest generative AI techniques, enabling users to pinpoint information from approximately 6 000 pages of patent law and procedures. It’s faster, more efficient and more focused than classic keyword searches, so any query regarding patent legislation can be quickly resolved.

The interface is simple and intuitive, allowing users to enter queries even when formulated in a conversational manner.
In each query, users can select from the following sources:
European Patent Convention (EPC)
EPC Guidelines
Unitary Patent-related provisions
PCT-EPO Guidelines
Boards of Appeal (BoA) case law
BoA decisions

Results are clearly displayed in a structured way, with concise summaries and direct links to the relevant legal documents.
Users value the platform’s speed, clarity of responses and ease of use
The launch follows a successful test period involving members from our user community of around 170 companies.
Feedback received from some pilot users confirm that the platform is now an essential part of their workflow or that they use it as their primary legal reference tool, replacing manual searches with the automatic retrieval of rules and guidelines.
Users also highlighted how the platform can help quickly identify the relevant legal reference when drafting communications, making their research more efficient. Alternating between traditional search methods and the platform can also make for a more streamlined process overall.
Additionally, the platform’s value for training new staff was noted, who can then be brought up to speed more quickly.
Generating translations
Users can benefit from a broad range of languages for their research or when requesting translations of the results provided.
History and archiving
As with other generative AI tools, the LIP keeps a history of past chats, which are easily accessible via the menu.
Providing feedback
With each query submitted, users have the option to provide feedback to the EPO on whether they are satisfied with the responses. Feedback is highly valued and will be used to train the LIP, helping to further improve the accuracy and relevance of the results over time. The tool does not learn autonomously, and so user input is crucial to helping refine its performance.
Looking ahead: MyEPO services in 2025
We remain dedicated to further enhancing our online services through continuous improvements developed in collaboration with our user community. The LIP milestone marks another step towards realising our vision of a more efficient, accessible and user-friendly European patent system.
