New Talk innovation podcast episode explores perceptions of quality
The European Patent Office (EPO) published a new podcast on quality today, featuring Steve Rowan, EPO Vice-President Patent Granting Process, and Peter R. Thomsen, President of the Institute of Professional Representatives before the EPO (epi). Rapidly emerging technologies and the growing use of IP raises several questions on quality: Do all players have the same expectations? Why is patent quality critical for applicants today? What role do users play? These are among the topics addressed in a podcast that explores perceptions of quality and examines the shared effort between the EPO and applicants in driving patent quality. Joff Wild, Head of Content at Sisvel and former Editor in Chief of IAM magazine, moderates the episode.
Highlights of the discussion
For the epi President, quality in the patent process encompasses two key aspects: first, the reliability and timeliness of the process, and second, the legal robustness of the final patent, which should withstand scrutiny in courts. Vice-President Rowan emphasised the value of direct interactions with applicants and patent attorneys, whether through one-to-one meetings with companies or through initiatives such as the Stakeholder Quality Assurance Panels (SQAPs).
President Thomsen noted that collaborative tools, such as the EPO's shared area, facilitate easy dialogue between the EPO and users and contribute to better quality outcomes. While perfection in quality may be unattainable within the patent system, the speakers agreed that continuous improvement is a shared journey requiring ongoing collaboration between all stakeholders.
