World Intellectual Property Day 2025: Feel the beat of IP
On 26 April 2025, the European Patent Office (EPO) will join the global intellectual property (IP) community in celebrating World Intellectual Property Day under this year’s vibrant theme: “IP and music: Feel the beat of IP.”
To mark the occasion, the EPO and national offices across Europe will launch a social media campaign to shine a spotlight on the deep connection between music and intellectual property. At the heart of this initiative is a nostalgic album cover featuring intriguing facts about music and IP, enabling the public to explore how technology underpins the sounds that move us.
The rhythm of technological development
Music has the power to unite, inspire and move people across cultures and generations. Behind every melody and beat, countless individuals—composers, songwriters, performers, producers and inventors—rely on IP rights to protect their creative contributions.
IP plays a crucial role in the music industry—not only by protecting original compositions and performances through copyright, but also by enabling the patenting of inventions that shape the way music is made and experienced. From advanced sound engineering tools and novel audio codecs to wearable music technologies and immersive concert experiences, patents safeguard the breakthroughs that push creative and technical boundaries.
