The European Inventor Award: breaking new ground
The European Inventor Award honours inventors not only for the genius of their scientific or technological breakthroughs, but also for the impact their inventions have on our lives.
For the first time in the history of the event, the 2021 edition was entirely digital and open to the public, who tuned in from around the world as the winners were revealed (watch the full recording). The EPO is now accepting nominations for the 2022 Award and invites you to submit a proposal before 1 October 2021.
Introducing the Young Inventors prize
To inspire the next generation of inventors, the EPO introduced the Young Inventors prize as part of its annual European Inventor Award. From students to entrepreneurs, the global prize is open to innovators aged 30 and under and will recognise initiatives across all technical fields. An idea, project or product in any field of technology may be proposed, as long as these initiatives use technology to solve a problem within the framework of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals. Each proposal must be accompanied by supporting information that is already in the public domain. A cash incentive has been made available to support young or early-career innovators to help them advance their work: the winner will receive EUR 20 000 and the second and third finalists will receive EUR 10 000 and EUR 5 000, respectively.
If you would like to learn more about the prize or if you know an inquisitive young mind who is considering entering, take note of the EPO's up-coming virtual roadshow. On 16 September, the Office will host an event where the Young Inventors prize will be discussed in-depth. The digital meet-up will include a Q&A session to answer any questions participants may have.
