How are the growth stages defined?
Information on growth stages is drawn from the original data supplied by Dealroom.
The growth of a company is determined by three metrics: number of employees, funding and valuation. These metrics allow us to categorise growth in three stages: early, breakout and late.
- Early stage – companies that have funding of zero to USD 15m and have fewer than 50 employees and are valued at under USD 100m
- Breakout stage – companies that have funding of USD 15m to 100m and/or have between 50 and 500 employees and/or are valued at USD 100m to 500m
- Late stage – companies that have funding of over USD 100m and/or have over 500 employees and/or are valued at over USD 500m. Companies classified as unicorns or thoroughbreds also belong to this category.
| Growth stage metrics | Early | Breakout | Late |
|---|---|---|---|
| Number of employees | < 50 | 50-500 | >500 |
| Funding (USD) | < 15m | 15-100m | >100m |
| Valuation (USD) | <100m | 100-500m | >500m |
