While hydrogen is a promising alternative to fossil fuels, producing it can be resource intensive, requiring water and energy. Join the next Inspiring Inventors to learn how Johan Martens and his team have tackled this problem with a unique solution. Their solar panel produces clean hydrogen from sunlight and moisture in the air without using external water, a connection to a power grid, gas pipelines or precious metals. Where did his journey begin? What motivated Johan to use science to tackle global challenges?

Johan Martens
Johan Martens led the development of a solar panel that produces clean hydrogen gas from sunlight and ambient moisture, offering a promising source of green energy for buildings. Since 2013, Martens has worked with Tom Bosserez and Jan Rongé in refining the technology and preparing it for commercialisation. The Belgian trio were finalists in the 2022 European Inventor Award in the Research category.
