On Saturday 19 October, the European Patent Office’s (EPO) Isar headquarters will open its doors to welcome visitors as part of Munich’s Long Night of Museums. From the basement to the roof, this special event offers the public a rare opportunity to see and learn more about the EPO’s history, architecture and art collection.
A highlight of the EPO’s Long Night of Museums activities is the public opening of the new “Transformation - Virtual and material realities in transit” exhibition in A&T 5-10, the cultural space housed in the building’s former patent archive. Visitors can join one of the 25-person guided tours offered in English, French and German (standard and easy language) or explore the exhibit individually at their own pace. The option to visit the history area of the culture space is also available.
The new exhibition brings together eleven pieces from the EPO’s art collection that display the ecological, social and cultural changes becoming visible due to the accelerating development of technology. By emphasising liminal states or transition zones, the artworks examine how these changes are shaping our present and future values on topics such as digitalisation, waste management, climate change, robotics and automation, space exploration, algorithms, artificial intelligence, diversity and inclusion and even our working hours.
