Quarterly update: quality dashboard

Earlier today, the European Patent Office (EPO) updated its quality dashboard to reflect figures from the third quarter of 2024. The latest results from product audits confirm continued high quality in search and a positive trend in findings relating to grant. For example, the share of incorrect assessment of novelty or inventive step has decreased from 7.3% to 6.9% compared to the previous quarter.
Search and classification have reached a high level of quality consistently over a long period of time. This has been verified thanks to extensive audits and an increased sample size - 3.5 times greater as compared to 5 years ago. For the remainder of 2024 we are therefore focusing on grant audits.
Launched in March 2024, the dashboard fosters transparency by delivering regular updates on quality standards and user satisfaction. It showcases essential key performance indicators (KPIs), providing stakeholders with a transparent picture of quality in the patent granting process at the EPO.
The launch of the dashboard follows the introduction of the annual Quality Action Plan, which outlines targeted actions to further improve the quality of the EPO’s products and services.
