EPO meets with CATL

The CATL delegation was led by Mr. Mingyan Sun, Vice President CATL Group and Global Chief Intellectual Property Officer. The EPO delegation was led by EPO President António Campinos, who was joined by Vice President Corporate Services Nellie Simon, Vice President Patent Granting Process Steve Rowan and Chief Operating Officer and Chief Technology Officer Angel Aledo Lopez, as well as several managers, experts and examiners involved in CATL applications.

Mr. Mingyan Sun thanked the President for the opportunity to exchange on many topics of mutual interest, including the Unitary Patent and technology trends in the field of batteries, as well as quality, practice harmonisation and opposition procedures. In particular, the CATL delegation commended the high quality of the EPO’s work and its skilled workforce. President Campinos reiterated that quality remains a key priority and outlined the EPO’s ongoing initiatives to uphold the highest standards. Further, the EPO delegation shared insights on the role of patents in fostering innovation and on optimising IP strategy.

Mr. Mingyan Sun underlined that the EU is a key strategic market for CATL and the largest outside China. He discussed the company’s intention to increase patent filings in the near future and highlighted that CATL has established an IP team in Europe to support its expansion.

Both delegations considered the exchanges to be highly constructive and to strengthen dialogue, agreeing to build on the progress made at future meetings. In closing, Mr. Mingyan Sun warmly noted, “We look forward to a closer working relationship, dialogue and friendship with the EPO.”
