Concurrent workshops (round 1)

There will be two workshops, each to be held twice in order to give seminar attendees the opportunity to attend them both. Each workshop will be chaired by an EPO director or team manager and a European patent attorney. They are interactive, hands-on sessions in which the participants will work on exercises based on specific automotive cases

11.00 - 12.45 hrs

Workshop 1:

Artificial intelligence and automotive innovation
Drafting successful inter-technology applications

Group 1:
Marjut Lattu-Hietamies, European Patent Attorney, Berggren Oy
Régis Quélavoine, Director Mobility and Mechatronics, EPO

Group 2:
Kennett Pedersen, Senior Expert, EPO
Philip Cupitt, European patent attorney, Marks & Clerk

Parcel delivery by drone, platooning trucks, self-driving taxis – have you ever wondered if these technologies are patented? And did you know that a high percentage of mobility and mechatronics applications already involve CII and AI? This workshop will look at how these bridging technologies can best be protected with practical examples from the area of vehicle control, including such modern themes as engine control and hybrid drivetrains. It will also give participants insight into how to draft and prosecute EPO applications in technologies around autonomous traffic and urban logistics.

Workshop 2:
You're in control!
Optimising the prosecution of automotive patent applications worldwide

Group 1:
Dorothée Weber-Bruls, European Patent Attorney, Jones Day®
Roberto Vacca, Director Mobility and Mechatronics, EPO

Group 2:
Gareth Lord, Director Mobility and Mechatronics, EPO
Rainer Böckelen, German and European patent attorney and partner, TBK

This workshop will look at the various filing routes available to applicants, in particular for those based in the EU. In particular, it will deal with PCT applications as possible basis for European applications, as well as alternatives. Ways of expediting the prosecution of these applications by overcoming statutory delays will be explored and possibilities to save unnecessary costs at each stage will be elaborated. The workshop will enable participants to draft and prosecute applications to gain the most value from the various alternatives as part of a global portfolio.

Disruptive developments such as in connectivity requirements challenge established vehicle manufactures and their suppliers. Furthermore, new players in the industry have a different approach to litigation and licencing and view of the value chain. In addition to these challenges, the mobility sector is at the forefront of a revolution in the application of expanding technologies such as AI and Blockchain. How do the automotive industry and its supply chain deal with this and what are the opportunities to be grasped?
17.00 - 17.10 hrs   Closing remarks
Roberta Romano-Götsch, Chief Operating Officer Mobility and Mechatronics, EPO

17.10 - 18.30 hrs   Drinks reception
