ICT seminar 2018 flyerEvent for patent professionals

6 November 2018
Tokyo, Japan

What is the importance for Japanese industry to protect its inventions in Europe? What are the opportunities and challenges Japanese practitioners can encounter? What are the main differences between Japanese and European practice in filing and prosecuting patent applications in the field of Information and Communication Technologies (ICT)?

The European Patent Office will host a seminar on "Patenting Information and Communication Technologies in Europe" on 6 November 2018 in Tokyo. This event will focus on the major aspects of filing and prosecuting ICT-related patent applications at the EPO.

Two workshops will be offered to the participants on the drafting of European applications in the respective areas of human-computer interfaces, healthcare and life sciences; the focus will be on typical issues with Japanese applications and how to remedy them. Each workshop will be chaired by a senior EPO director, supported by a European patent attorney experienced in both the European and the Japanese systems and will provide insights into best practices across the whole patenting process, from filing to the final stage of opposition. There will be a "hands-on" opportunity to look at drafting patent applications according to European standards.

Various plenary sessions will be offered on topics such as the EPO approach to patenting Computer Implemented Inventions (CII) and the challenges of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in patents. Furthermore the EPO’s Praktika Extern programme for examiners will be presented as well as the opposition and appeal procedures before the EPO.

This high-level event is organised in close co-operation with the Japan Patent Attorneys Association (JPAA) and will take place one day before the Patent Information Fair & Conference (PIFC) which will take place in Tokyo on 7-9 November.
