Quality and timeliness of the European patent granting procedure

A European patent has a potential reach of 700 million people in 44 countries. In addition, 15 partner offices expedite prosecution of applications searched by the EPO via the Patent Prosecution Highway.

The EPO is therefore an excellent entry into the global patent world. Our users expect reliability and legal certainty in good time from the Office's products. Quality is one of the main goals of the Strategic Plan 2023 and the EPO is committed to excellence.

New Espacenet

Espacenet, the EPO's flagship patent information service, underwent a complete revamp last year, with a fully functional beta version publicly available since November 2018. New features include ranking and improved results navigation, filtering for statistical analyses and a flexible and easy-to-use advanced search. Responsive design enables the user to work on a range of devices and screen sizes, including tablets and smartphones. In addition to an overview of some of the main elements, this presentation will give users an opportunity to try the new Espacenet, which will run in parallel to the classic version for several months before eventually becoming the default.

Aimed primarily at Online Filing users, professional representatives and support staff who are familiar with the current Online Filing and now have an interest in the web-based online filing (CMS).

The web-based online filing tool allows you to file patent applications with the EPO without having to install any special software. You simply access the system via the EPO website.

  • Subsequently filed items for all EP procedures - EP Form 1038
  • International (PCT) applications - Form PCT/RO/101 (including for biological material)

Technical workshop on the established EPO Online Filing software - basic installation, configuration and system administration

This workshop is aimed at IT personnel and technical support staff responsible for setting up the EPO Online Filing software in their company or interested in the technical aspects of Online Filing installation, configuration and system administration.

 Content:

  • Overview of the different ways of installing Online Filing
  • Overview of new online filing (CMS) and Web-Form Filing
  • Hands-on installation of associated software and hardware, including the smart card security system
  • Hands-on installation of the Online Filing software
  • Basic configuration of the Online Filing software
  • Configuration of different web browsers for new online filing (CMS)

This workshop is intended for users with a basic knowledge of the PCT procedure. For the practical exercises, the Online Filing software will be used. 

To get the most from this session, we recommend that you attend the theoretical workshop on filing PCT applications first.

  • Short introduction to the basic functionalities of the Online Filing software, especially the PCT plug-in
  • Filing international applications where the EPO is the receiving office (RO/EP)
    • Filing of PCT/RO/101, etc.
    • Subsequently filed items: PCT-SFD plug-in
