Pre-conference seminars

As in previous years, optional seminars and a pre-conference workshop will be offered prior to the "East meets West" forum. You may register for these sessions individually.

On Wednesday, 18 April 2018, the Patent Documentation Group (PDG) will again host a pre-conference workshop offering an informal exchange between European industry representatives and Asian patent offices delegates. On Thursday, 19 April 2018, various seminars will be offered by EPO experts.

Please note: Spaces in all these additional activities are limited. As for the seminars, a minimum number of 5 participants will be required. We will therefore have to cancel individual seminars where this number is not reached.

What the user community needs - towards effective collaboration between East and West
Chairman: Peter Kallas (BASF)

At the 2009 "East meets West" forum in Vienna, the PDG (Patent Documentation Group) met representatives of Asian patent offices and their related organisations to discuss closer cooperation between industry users and the Asian patent offices. In the following years, this fruitful dialogue was continued (click on the links to see the recent documentation from 2015, 2016 and 2017). This meeting has now established itself as a focal point for discussing user requirements pertaining to Asian patent information.

This year, PDG representatives will meet again with representatives from Asian patent offices to continue this informal exchange. The workshop will look at progress made since the last meeting. It will review recent developments in Asian patent information and their impact on patent information users. The aim of this ongoing dialogue between the user community and experts from Asian patent offices is to identify areas that still require improvements and to find a collaborative way of setting priorities for these.

Patent information from the ARABPAT member states
Trainers: Cherry Joy Engelmann, Tania Malmierca (EPO)

In November 2017, the EPO made the ARABPAT interface available to the public via the country selection in Espacenet ( This means that users can now search for patent data, in Arabic, from the Patent Offices of Egypt, Morocco, Jordan and Tunisia.

To assist users in further understanding patent data from the ARABPAT member states, this session will cover background information on the data coverage, patent systems and patent documentation in these jurisdictions. In addition to this theoretical overview, practical tips on how to locate patent information in Espacenet and local online sources will be provided.

Patent information from Iran
Trainer: Seyed Kamran Bagheri, Tehran University/Scuola Superiore Sant'Anna

This course will introduce some special features of the patent system and documentation in Iran. Furthermore, information will be given on which data is currently available in this country and how it can be accessed.

Accessing Asian trade mark information
Trainers: Christine Kämmer, Jutta Haußer, Jürgen Mühl (EPO)

This course is your stepping stone to understanding trade marks from Asia. We will provide an overview of aspects of the trade mark systems, focusing mainly on Japan, China and Korea. Country-related specifics in trade mark registration, such as challenges resulting from Asian languages/characters, will also be highlighted. In addition, essential online sources for searching Asian trade marks -  both in English and in local languages - will be introduced.
