Keynote lecture 1

High growth and patent commercialisation

Recent studies carried out by the EPO and partner institutions offer new insights into the challenges and opportunities of commercialising patented inventions. The presentation will focus in particular on a joint study carried out in collaboration with the European Investment Bank, providing a comprehensive inventory and economic analysis of deep tech start-ups and SMEs that are commercialising patented digital technologies and devices in Europe and the US. This lecture discusses related surveys conducted by the EPO and looks at how SMEs tackle and overcome common challenges by aligning their IP strategy more closely with their business objectives to make best use of their IP.

Keynote lecture 2

Sustainable competitive advantage powered by operational excellence

Unfortunately, the role of operational excellence in business has been widely misunderstood. What does operational excellence really mean and how can it help CEOs to build a truly sustainable competitive advantage, the Holy Grail of business advancement?

The idea of operational excellence as an intellectual asset was introduced in 2019 at the first HTB conference in Dublin. It acts alongside the other two key intellectual assets – technology and brand – as an important value driver for businesses.

This keynote lecture describes a new strategic model containing the levels and pillars of operational excellence that enable truly sustainable competitive advantage.

Keynote lecture 3

IP management standards for digital business

Digital businesses are created around digital business objects, e.g. digital business models, digital platforms, digital user journeys or apps. For business success, these digital objects and solutions need to be protected by patents, but the digital invention process in the company has to be organised differently from in classical engineering. To master the digital invention process, companies need to introduce an IP management system suited to the digital challenges, such as the one described in IP management standards ISO56005 and DIN 77006.

Keynote lecture 4

Regionalisation and global growth

Today's markets are highly connected and international. Businesses and organisations looking to monetise IP portfolios for value need to think about IP strategies that match this. Regionalisation and global growth are important factors to consider early. This session will touch on trends and considerations in different regions, focusing on Asia and IP developments there.

Plenaries

Plenary 1:

Make open innovation work

Open innovation in the digital economy involves developing and using software, data and standards. For example, if you see the word ‘smart’ used to describe a product or service, it is likely that open-source software, open data and open standards are being used to support the AI/ML and connectivity that makes it ‘smart’. This session will provide IP insights that those developing and commercialising digital products and services increasingly need to address in view of the ubiquity of open innovation in digital markets.

Plenary 2:

Business use of patent information

This session focuses on business intelligence. It looks at why patent information matters and at how to extract knowledge from patents to make informed business decisions.

You want to be able to identify trends in technology investments and new growth markets? Patent data is a rich source of information that will help you to do just that. That’s why it's crucial to align your patent strategy and the way you use patent information with your innovation strategy. The information and tips you pick up at this panel discussion will equip you to make better use of patent information. And that, in turn, will allow you to make better innovation decisions for your company.

Plenary 3:

Turning technology into financial assets

Technology, especially when well protected by a patent or other form of IP, is a key asset for high-growth companies. If properly managed, it can play a crucial role in raising growth funding, in making deals with customers or partners and in any potential exit (whether M&A deal or IPO). This session will discuss how to treat and leverage your technology as a financial asset in practice, from both the venture and investor perspectives.

Plenary 4:

Business model disruption

In this session, we will highlight the disruptive potential of blockchain technology, more specifically how tokenised economies give rise to a wide range of new business models. We will highlight the potential of blockchain technology as an enabler of new business models, its potential implications for intellectual property management and the as yet unsolved legal challenges.

Plenary 5:

Succeeding with market facilitators

How and when can market facilitators between buyers and sellers bring success and what are their advantages and drawbacks? This plenary session looks at these issues and at other success factors.

Top of page

Plenary 6:

Risk management & freedom-to-operate

This session is all about IP risks and includes a spotlight on software-related patents. In particular, the need for risk management and the balance to be struck between risk reduction and cost will be discussed. The panellists will give insights into "best practice" that can be a starting point for implementing or optimising patent risk management processes. Special considerations that apply to software-related patents will be addressed in detail.

Plenary 7:

Valuation of IP for debt financing

Banks have traditionally required tangible assets as security for lending. However, an increasing number of lenders now recognise that the real sources of value in high-growth companies are intangible. As a result, exciting new IP-based lending approaches are starting to emerge. While this is encouraging news for IP owners, there is more to be done if IP-based financing is to move from the margins to the mainstream, as a new WIPO initiative acknowledges. This session will examine the forms of finance that are emerging, the barriers that exist to wider adoption and the ways in which IP valuation approaches are evolving.

Top of page

Plenary 8:

IP assessment management

There is a constant growth in intellectual property assets, but they must be used effectively. This session will discuss how important it is for companies to conduct an IP assessment to determine whether their IP is adequately protected and whether it provides a competitive advantage. It will also explore the categories to be addressed when evaluating a new technology and which stakeholders should be involved in this process.
