The Korean Intellectual Property Office (KIPO) recently
published its Annual Report for the year 2017. Apart from articles on IP
policy, major events, law changes and other topics, the report includes a comprehensive section on
IP-related statistics. Some of the most important findings are as follows:
In 2017, KIPO has witnessed a slight decrease in
filings for all four major IP rights (patents, utility models, trade marks and
designs) compared to 2016
The number of patent filings decreased by 2.0
percent to 204,775.
Utility model applications decreased by 12.3
percent for a total of 6,811.
On the contrary, the number of patent
registrations rose by 10.8 percent to 120,662 and utility model registrations
increased by 4.8 percent to 2,993.
Most applications for patent and utility models
were filed by domestic (Korean) applicants (78 and 95 percent respectively)
The average first action pendency period for
patents (calculated from the examination request to the first office action)
slightly decreased from 10.6 months in 2016 to 10.4 months in 2017.
Similar to previous years, KIPO outsourced 49.3
percent of prior art searches for patent and utility model applications to
specialised search institutions.
