On 22 January 2019, the Korean Intellectual Property Office
(KIPO) published statistics on IP filings in the year 2018. Some of the most
important results include the following:
The overall number of IP filings (patents,
utility models, designs and trade marks taken together) rose by 4.9% from
457,955 in 2017 to 480,245 in 2018.
Patent filings increased by 2.5% to 209,992
(previously 204,775) while utility model applications decreased by 8.5% to
6,232 (previously 6,809).
Trade mark applications witnessed a growth by
9.5% from previously 182,918 to 200,341.
With regard to patents, 162,582 applications
were filed by domestic applicants (+2.2%) and 47,410 by foreigners (+3.6%).
Among patent applications from foreigners, there
was a particular strong increase for applicants from the following jurisdictions:
United Kingdom (+19.6%), Switzerland
(+11.1%), Chinese Taipei (+10.3%) and Germany (+9.3%).
