Selection events for patent examiners

Vacancies for engineers and scientists

Are you an engineer or scientist interested in joining an international team at the forefront of technology?

If so, apply now for our upcoming selection events for European patent examiners in Munich and The Hague.

The next events will take place in

  • Munich from 12 to 16 October 2015 (application deadline 18 September 2015 - closed) and
  • The Hague from 9 to 13 November 2015 (application deadline 16 October 2015).

Technical areas in which we currently have vacancies


The procedure to take part in selection event is as follows:

  • Step 1: Application

    Fill out the online application form. Receipt of your application will be confirmed by email.

  • Step 2: Skype interview

    If you are shortlisted, you will be invited to participate in a Skype interview which will include a test of your language skills.

  • Step 3: Selection event

    If your Skype interview is successful, you will be invited to take part in a selection event in Munich or The Hague (depending on where you applied to work), lasting 1 or 2 days. You will also be asked to complete an online personality questionnaire beforehand.

    The selection event will comprise one or more face-to-face interviews to evaluate your professional and language skills. You will also have the opportunity, through presentations and by meeting current EPO staff, to find out more about the European Patent Office and the job of European patent examiner, a role which demands a unique combination of scientific expertise, analytical thinking, language skills and an interest in intellectual property law.

    Places at these events are limited but suitable candidates who are not invited to the next selection event may be considered for a subsequent one.

Also, suitable candidates in the areas of computers, telecommunications and applied physics, where we currently have numerous vacancies, may be invited for interviews at the EPO before or after the selection events.

The job involves searching in online databases, analysing documents, communicating orally and in writing with patent applicants and their attorneys, and then taking decisions on the grant of patents valid in up to 40 European countries.

Salary and benefits

The EPO offers competitive salaries, an excellent social package, and varied work in a modern international environment. The net (basic) starting salary* for this vacancy ranges from EUR 5.150,08 to 7.293,52 per month, depending on experience. In addition, depending on their personal circumstances, EPO staff may be entitled to relocation benefits and various allowances (e.g. household, dependant's, childcare, education, expatriation, installation, rent and language allowance).

* after deduction of EPO internal tax and before deduction of staff contributions to the social-security and pension schemes.
