Are you an engineer or scientist interested in joining an international team at the forefront of technology?

The EPO still has some vacancies to fill in 2015 in the areas of computers, telecommunications and applied physics. Suitable candidates may be invited for interviews at the EPO before the next selection events in autumn 2015.

Selection process

The selection process comprises the following steps:

  • Step 1: Application
    Fill out the online application form. Receipt of your application will be confirmed by email.
  • Step 2: Skype interview
    If you are shortlisted, you will be invited to participate in a Skype interview which will include a test of your language skills.
  • Step 3: Selection event
    If your Skype interview is successful, you will be invited to take part in one or more face-to-face interviews in Munich or The Hague (depending on where you applied to work). You will also be asked to complete an online personality questionnaire beforehand.

    The interviews are intended to evaluate your professional and language skills. They are also an opportunity for you to find out more about the European Patent Office and the job of European patent examiner, a role which demands a unique combination of scientific expertise, analytical thinking, language skills and an interest in intellectual property law.

The job involves searching in online databases, analysing documents, communicating orally and in writing with patent applicants and their attorneys, and then taking decisions on the grant of patents valid in up to 40 European countries.

Salary and benefits

The EPO offers competitive salaries, an excellent social package, and varied work in a modern international environment. The net (basic) starting salary* for this vacancy ranges from EUR 4 500 to 6 500 per month, depending on experience. In addition, depending on their personal circumstances, EPO staff may be entitled to relocation benefits and various allowances (e.g. household, dependant's, childcare, education, expatriation, installation, rent and language allowance).

* after deduction of EPO internal tax and before deduction of staff contributions to the social-security and pension schemes.
