Vacancies for engineers and scientists

Are you an engineer or scientist interested in joining an international team at the forefront of technology?

If so, apply now for our Autumn Selection Events for European patent examiners in Munich and The Hague.

The events will take place in

  • The Hague from 10 to 14 November and
  • Munich from 24 to 28 November.

Please see below for the technical areas in which we currently have vacancies.

There are number of steps involved in the selection process to participate in our selection event:

  • Step 1: Application
    Fill out the online application form. Receipt of your application will be confirmed by email.
  • Step 2: Skype interview
    If your application is shortlisted, you will be invited to participate in a Skype interview which will cover a number of areas as well as testing your language skills.
  • Step 3: Selection Event
    Upon successful completion of the Skype interview, you will be invited to The Hague (if you applied for a position in The Hague) or Munich (if you applied for a position in Munich) to participate in our selection event, lasting 1 - 2 days. You will also be asked to complete an online personality questionnaire and online ability tests (numerical and verbal reasoning) before attending the event.

The selection event will comprise one (or more) face-to-face interviews, which will evaluate your language skills and professional skills. It is also an opportunity for candidates to find out more about the European Patent Office via presentations and meeting current EPO staff. Candidates can discover more about the job of European patent examiner, a role which demands a unique combination of scientific expertise, analytical thinking, language skills and an interest in intellectual property law.

Please note that there are only a limited number of places available for these events. Suitable candidates who are not selected for this Autumn Event will be considered under the regular interview procedure.

The deadline for applications to attend the events is  

  • 2 October 2014 for The Hague and
  • 9 October 2014 for Munich.

Who can apply?

Engineers and scientists with sufficient language skills. Please see our required profile section for details.

The job involves searching in online databases, analysing documents, communicating orally and in writing with patent applicants and their attorneys, and then taking decisions on the grant of patents valid in up to 40 European countries.

Salary and benefits

The EPO offers a competitive salary (4200-8000 EUR/month net - depending on experience). Staff members of the EPO are further provided with various benefits and allowances as part of the conditions of service, such as family allowances, support for education, private medical insurance, pension scheme, relocation benefits.
