    Notice from the European Patent Office dated 5 September 1994 concerning mail addressed to the European Patent Office

    (This notice supersedes the "Notice concerning the marking of private or confidential mail", OJ EPO 1983, 148. The "Notice concerning the change of postcodes in Germany", OJ EPO 1993, 372, remains valid.)

    1. Mail relating to the patent grant, opposition or appeals procedures and invoices should merely be addressed to the European Patent Office. Only administrative mail should also indicate the person or department intended to receive it.

    2. Mail relating to the patent grant, opposition or appeals procedures and invoices

    Mail relating to the patent grant, opposition or appeals procedures and invoices are opened by the Post Room, marked with the date of receipt and forwarded via the normal official channels.

    3. Mail relating to administrative matters

    Each item of incoming administrative mail is stamped to confirm receipt, then forwarded unopened to the addressee. If the addressee is unnamed or not readily identifiable, the item is opened to identify the recipient, then re-sealed, stamped as having been opened and forwarded.

     

    1 No mail relating to the patent grant, opposition or appeals procedures may be filed at the Vienna sub-office because it is not a filing office within the meaning of Article 75(1)(a) EPC.
