    INFORMATION FROM THE EPO

Notice from the European Patent Office dated 18 June 2002 concerning mail addressed to the European Patent Office

(This notice supersedes the "Notice concerning mail addressed to the European Patent Office", OJ EPO 1994, 744-745. The "Notice concerning the change of postcodes in Germany", OJ EPO 1993, 372, remains valid.)

    1. Mail relating to the patent grant, opposition or appeals procedures should be addressed direct to the European Patent Office. Only mail relating to administrative matters should be directed to a particular person or department, in which case "European Patent Office" should appear in the first line of the address, followed on the next line by the addressee's name, directorate/department and room.

    Example:

    European Patent Office

    Name, Directorate, Room

    D-80298 Munich

The postal addresses of the various EPO locations are as follows:

    European Patent Office
    D-80298 Munich

    European Patent Office
    D-10958 Berlin

    European Patent Office
    Postbus 5818
    NL-2280 HV Rijswijk

    European Patent Office1
    Postfach 90
    Rennweg 12
    A-1030 Vienna

    2. All mail relating to the patent grant, opposition or appeals procedures is opened by the Post Room, marked with the date of receipt and forwarded via the official channels. From now on, however, administrative mail too will be opened and date-stamped by the Post Room. This procedural change will allow all invoices to be read straight into the EPO finance system as soon as they arrive in the Post Room. Administrative mail will not be opened by the Post Room if marked accordingly (for example "personal" or "confidential").

1 No mail relating to the patent grant, opposition or appeals procedures may be filed at the Vienna sub-office because it is not a filing office within the meaning of Article 75(1)(a) EPC (OJ EPO 1992, 183).
