Sequence submission tools

Important information

On 1 July 2022, WIPO Standard ST.26 will enter into force. For applications with a filing date on or after 1 July 2022, sequence listings should be filed in ST.26. To create sequence listings compliant with the new standard, you should use WIPO Sequence.

WIPO Standard ST.26 does not apply to European and international applications filed before 1 July 2022. These applications must continue to comply with WIPO Standard ST.25. This includes upon entry into the European phase and any sequence listing corrections, rectifications, amendments or translations, even those submitted after 1 July 2022 (in which case you can use BiSSAP).

For more information, see the notice from the EPO dated 9 December 2021 (OJ EPO 2021, A97).

Information for users of BiSSAP (version 1.3 or earlier)

The problems reported for older versions of BiSSAP have been resolved in new BiSSAP version 1.3.6, currently available only for Windows users. Mac OS and Linux versions will not be updated to be compatible with Java 8.

About BiSSAP

BiSSAP is a computer program designed to facilitate the creation of sequence listings that comply with WIPO Standard ST.25 for patent applications containing biological sequences with a filing date before 1 July 2022 (see Rule 30 EPCRule 5.2 PCT, the decision of the President and the notice from the EPO dated 9 December 2021 (OJ EPO 2021, A96 and A97)).

It has been developed by the European Patent Office in collaboration with national patent offices and the European Bioinformatics Institute.

BiSSAP can be used to prepare and verify sequences, generate the sequence listing files for submission, import existing sequence listings in WIPO ST.25 and convert between sequence listing formats (WIPO ST.25 and XML proposal). It also contains a "batch verification" module allowing users to verify collections of sequence listings.

You can access published patent sequence data and other published patent data resources in life sciences via the EBI's website.

System requirements BiSSAP 1.3.6:

BiSSAP will run on the following operating systems:

  • Windows Vista and Windows 7, 8, 8.1 or 10 (both 32- and 64-bit systems).

Your workstation must also meet the following technical requirements:

  • 2 GB RAM (4 GB recommended)
  • 4 GB free hard-disk space for program files and data (the necessary disk space depends on the total data volume of your sequence listing projects)
  • Screen resolution 1 280 x 900 pixels (greater than 1 680 x 1 200 recommended)
  • Java 8 JRE (build 1.8 or newer) installed

This version is backward compatible with:

  • Windows Vista and Windows 7 and 8 (64-bit systems); Java 6 and 7
System requirements BiSSAP 1.3:

BiSSAP will run on the following operating systems:

  • Mac OS X (10.5.5 or higher, 10.6.1 or higher)
  • Linux (with GTK libraries)

Your workstation must also meet the following technical requirements:

  • 1 GB RAM (recommended: 2 GB)
  • 100 MB disk space for installation, with additional disk space for data
  • Screen resolution 1 280 x 900 (recommended: 1 680 x 1 200 or higher)
  • Java 6 JRE installed

BiSSAP is a desktop application which does not require an internet connection.  However, taxonomies and certain help pages are updated automatically if the workstation is connected to the internet.
