Devices, apparatus, instruments and gadgets
Mechanical, electronic or digital devices are potentially patentable. They might be used in a manufacturing process, such as a hydraulic lift or robot arm, or a household item such as a camera or drill; it could be a wholly digital tool.
Some countries also protect new inventions with utility models (Wikipedia article). However, these are often only available for products, components or devices, but not for processes, chemicals or microbiological materials. They are often faster and cheaper to obtain than patents because the application is not examined, but are typically shorter-lived (lasting 6-15 years). Utility model applications can sometimes support patent applications.
