EPO launches new podcast – Talk innovation
New video series Inventors against coronavirus also highlights work of outstanding innovators
Munich, 11 September 2020 – The EPO has launched a new podcast channel called Talk innovation. The podcast will provide perspectives on innovation today through interviews with experts, whether patent examiners, inventors or specialists in the commercialisation of innovation. The first episodes feature interviews with former finalists and winners of the European Inventor Award speaking about their latest research and innovation trends, with a focus on inventions against coronavirus. The series will also cover other topics, such as patent landscaping and economic studies presented by the EPO.
The EPO has also just published a new video series shining a spotlight on inventors working on COVID-19 solutions. The series, Inventors against coronavirus, comprises interviews with experts from several fields including vaccinology, satellite navigation, diagnostics and haematology, and explores the role of each in contributing to efforts to tackle the pandemic.
The series profiles seven inventors, all of whom are former European Inventor Award finalists and winners. They include vaccine developer Rino Rappuoli, who provides insight into reverse vaccinology 2.0, a technique enabling vaccines to be produced quicker than ever before; José Ángel Ávila Rodríguez, co-inventor of the radio signals for the Galileo satellite navigation system, speaking about the use of satellites in mapping the spread of the virus; and Helen Lee, whose point of care diagnostic device, initially invented to test for HIV in developing nations, has now been adapted to deliver accurate SARS CoV 2 results in just 90 minutes.
Inventors against coronavirus is one of several initiatives taken by the EPO to keep the public and researchers informed about coronavirus-related technologies, by providing expert viewpoints and data to help them make informed decisions. Earlier this year the Office published a new section on its website, Fighting coronavirus, with datasets compiled by our patent examiners and data analysts to support the important work of clinicians, scientists and engineers. The cartographies available there show recent developments in coronavirus-related technical fields as revealed in patent databases, including information on which countries and inventors have filed the most patent applications.
