EPO publishes its staff rules and regulations
Munich, 30 September 2015 -- The European Patent Office (EPO) has today published its staff regulations and other related rules online. Known as the "Service Regulations", these rules define the working conditions and terms of employment particular to the EPO.
Previously published only internally, the Service Regulations are now available to all stakeholders and potential job applicants. Their publication puts the EPO on a par with other leading international organisations in terms of the transparency of its internal regulatory framework.
"As an international organisation set up under the European Patent Convention, the EPO has its own set of rules which govern our internal working conditions," EPO President Benoît Battistelli explained. "Approved by our 38 member states and amended over time, the Service Regulations safeguard the sound functioning of the Office. They are further proof of the principle of strict legality of all processes within the EPO. These regulations underlie the working practices of the EPO and strongly contribute to the trust placed in the Organisation and its work by innovating businesses around the globe."
Covering all aspects of working life - from recruitment to retirement, and including staff rights and obligations, the career system, working conditions, and remuneration and benefits - the regulations provide a detailed legal framework for employment at the EPO. In some respects they may differ from corresponding national provisions in those member states where the Office maintains places of employment. They therefore provide clarity and security for EPO staff in carrying out their duties.
At present, the online version of the Service Regulations is available in English only. The French and German online versions are in preparation and will follow soon.
