The UK-based magazine Managing IP yesterday honoured Peter Messerli, EPO Vice-President and Head of the boards of appeal, with the "Outstanding achievement award" for his work in intellectual property.

The magazine said that Peter Messerli has been at the heart of patent law developments in Europe, managing the workload of the EPO Boards of Appeal and chairing the Enlarged Board, which has played an increasingly visible role in developing the law on issues such as Swiss-style claims, dosage regimens, stem cells, surgical methods, divisional applications and of course computer-implemented inventions.

Mr Messerli has headed the Directorate-General Appeals for 15 years. The Awards Committee underlined that during his term, "the decisions of the Boards of Appeal have become highly regarded by European practitioners and courts", and also increasingly found recognition by the public.

"In many cases they have helped to harmonise issues where there has been confusion or differing interpretations. His leadership and management of the Boards has been widely applauded and we are delighted to present this award to him this evening", the Committee said.

He received the trophy at the Dorchester Hotel in London from the magazine's Editor.

Former winners include former EPO President Alison Brimelow, the Assistant Director-General of WIPO, Ernesto Rubio, Wubbo de Boer and João de Sousa of OHIM, as well as the late Lord Justice Nicolas Pumfrey, who had also been a legally qualified external member of the EPO's Enlarged Board of Appeal.
