INPI President Jorge Ávila and EPO President Benoît Battistelli
The President of the European Patent Office (EPO), Benoît Battistelli, and the President of the Brazilian National Industrial Property Institute (INPI), Jorge Ávila, signed a memorandum of understanding on joint activities to further develop co-operation in industrial property matters.
"Co-operation between the EPO and INPI will benefit both Brazilian and European companies operating in the most important market in Latin America as well as users of the patent system in general," said EPO President Battistelli. "Our joint efforts are essential in supporting a solid system of patent protection in Brazil with the aim of promoting innovation. For Europe, our close co-operation will also mean better access to knowledge about technologies coming out of Brazil and the region."
"This agreement paves the way for us to continue and further develop the fruitful co-operation that already exists between the EPO and INPI on industrial property," said INPI President Jorge Ávila. "By sharing expertise and tools, we can greatly improve and strengthen the protection of innovation through patents in Brazil and in Europe."
Under the five-year agreement, the two offices will work together in key areas such as patent examination and administration procedures, human resources development, office automation and patent information.
The memorandum was signed in Geneva on 26 September by the heads of the two offices at a bilateral meeting on the sidelines of the annual General Assembly of the World Intellectual Property Organization.
