EPO President Benoît Battistelli highlighted the key role that patent information can play in informing business decisions and policy making at the EPO Patent Information Conference in Copenhagen.

Opening the conference today, Mr Battistelli said: "Traditionally, patent information was a source of technical information. Now, modern patent analysis goes beyond that. For policy-makers, IP data reveals how our patent systems are performing.... Patent data offers the ability to study regional strengths and weaknesses, allows us to obtain a broader view and a picture of global developments in innovation."

The EPO President also said that good IP information can drive innovation and the economy. Reliable IP statistics can help companies understand the latest trends in business and technology; and patent information and statistics can help identify candidates for emerging technologies that might become key players in the market.

The EPO is the world's leading provider of patent information and continually adds new tools and services to its existing product lines. At the conference, delegates will be shown features of PATSTAT Online, which allows statistical analyses and visualisations of the EPO's data collection, and be introduced to the mobile-optimised versions of Espacenet and the European Patent Register.

"Providing users with the best data means they can take the best decisions, and can use the patent system efficiently and well," Mr Battistelli said.

The EPO Patent Information Conference, the biggest conference on patent information in Europe, is taking place for the 25th time this week. Around 400 participants from over 45 different countries are attending.
