INPI President Dámaso Pardo and EPO President Benoît Battistelli
The EPO and the National Institute of Industrial Property of Argentina (INPI) have signed a memorandum of understanding on bilateral co-operation. The agreement was signed by EPO President Benoît Battistelli and INPI President Dámaso Pardo during a visit to the EPO in Munich by an INPI delegation on 9 and10 May. It foresees joint activities in the areas of patent procedures, search, examination and automation, as well as use and exchange of patent data and databases.
"We are very pleased to intensify our co-operation with the National Institute of Industrial Property," said EPO President Benoît Battistelli. "Argentina is a major destination for trade and investment from European companies so this co-operation agreement will be a win-win situation for companies and researchers in our regions, as well as our two offices."
INPI President Pardo said: "We are glad to have signed a bilateral co-operation agreement with the EPO, one of the best patent offices in the world. By working closely with the EPO, INPI will be able to provide a high-quality training programme to patent examiners in order to improve and strengthen our IP system, boosting innovation and economic growth in Argentina."
During the two-day visit, the EPO and INPI held in-depth discussions on various topics, including the search and examination of patent applications, and the EPO's Early Certainty from Search initiative which is decreasing the time needed to process applications. Data exchange was also an important topic on the agenda, given the strategic importance of patent information for users and applicants. Also discussed were the classification of patent documents (including the Cooperative Patent Classification system), the Patent Prosecution Highway programme for accelerated treatment of applications, the use of tools such as the EPO's professional search tool EPOQUE Net. President Battistelli also underlined the EPO's quality policy and the latest measures that the EPO is taking in this field
