In his first official visit to San Marino, EPO President Benoît Battistelli met today with representatives of government, academia and industry, to discuss how to further strengthen the country's intellectual property system, in particular with the support of the San Marino Patent and Trademark Office.
Leading up to the visit, President Battistelli highlighted that closer co-operation between the EPO and its member states is crucial to providing a better service to European industry: "Only by working together with the national patent offices through the exchange of best-practices, know-how, and tools, can we make optimum use of the resources and competences available among the whole network of European countries," he said.
President Battistelli was officially welcomed by the Captains Regent at the Palazzo Pubblico and met a number of high-ranking officials to discuss co-operation, including Secretary of State for Industry, Agriculture and Commerce Marco Arzilli, Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs Antonella Mularoni, Rector of the University of San Marino Giorgio Petroni, and Director of the Patent and Trademark Office Silvia Rossi.
The aim was to identify initiatives to promote IP awareness and provide IP support to industry and universities in the Republic of San Marino. These projects will build on the expertise of the San Marino Patent and Trademark Office and its co-operation with the EPO, and heavily involve the University of San Marino, which is currently leading an initiative to set up a technology park.
San Marino has been a member of the European Patent Organisation since 1 July 2009.
