EPO President Benoît Battistelli and the President of the Spanish Patent and Trademark Office (SPTO), Ms Amparo Fernández González, this week signed an agreement today on co-operation activities in Latin America.
"Co-operation between the EPO and its member states is essential in promoting a quality based patent system around the world," said EPO President Benoît Battistelli. "Latin America is an important trading partner and investment market for Europe, and an emerging region in the area of patent protection. Our joint efforts there in supporting solid patent protection will pay off in terms of benefit for the Latin American, European and global economy."
"This agreement recognizes the role of Spain in Latin America on IP matters" said the President of SPTO Ms Amparo Fernández. "SPTO and EPO will jointly work in order to improve and strengthen the protection of innovation through patents in Latin America
The purpose of this agreement is to further develop the already existing co-operation arrangements between EPO and SPTO on IP in Latin America with a view to aligning their respective activities in key areas such as patent examination and administration, human resources development, office automation and patent information.
The offices agree to co-operate in joint actions or in consultation in order to facilitate the development of the patent system in Latin American countries, and the access to these systems. The agreement was signed on 11 July 2011 at a ceremony at the International University Menéndez Pelayo in Santander (Spain).
