Technical and legal experts from the EPO and the Community Plant Variety Office (CPVO) gathered for a second joint workshop to exchange information on plant-related patents and plant variety rights. The event, which took place at the EPO's headquarters in Munich on 30 March, was organised within the framework of the Administrative Arrangement signed between the two organisations in February 2016. The agreement aims to strengthen bilateral co-operation between the EPO and CPVO and to increase transparency through the exchange of information.
During the workshop, CPVO and EPO experts continued their exchange on working practices on issues such as the use of databases and other working tools, quality policy, as well as measures to ensure clarity and transparency in this important technical field. It follows a first joint training held at the CPVO in Angers, France, in September 2016.
Plant variety rights give breeders control over the propagating and harvested material of their new plant varieties and allow the holder of a plant variety right to choose between becoming the exclusive marketers of the variety or licensing the variety to others. The EPO does not grant patents for plant varieties as this is excluded under European patent law.
